Lecture: Sustainability in Footwear Production – Requirements, challenges and benefits of product traceability

PERFORMANCE DAYS, Munich

Footwear Workshops & Exchange

Thursday 30th October 2025

11:00 - 11:20 CET

The EU and its citizens want traceability of our products.
Where they come from, and if production causes any harm and how are the products used / how do they perform.

The proposed solutions are:
1. Product passports
What is a product passport, what is in it?
2. Life cycle assessment
What is LCA?
What can producers and on the other hand the citizens can get out of these tools?
How can we optimize our products from this data and what are the conflicts?
Regarding:
Durability – Recyclability – Low environmental impact

Sustainability and Chemical Testing

Dr. Johannes Augustin Menges studied Chemistry at Heidelberg University and completed his PhD at Saarland University, learning about disaggregation of large systems into small entities on the account of single-molecule fluorescence microscopy. Since 2019, he has specialized in analytical testing of substances in consumer goods at PFI Pirmasens. From 2024, this understanding of large systems came in handy to apply the product environmental footprint (PEF) method, which serves as a pillar to EU sustainability regulations.
