New Wool Forum at PERFORMANCE DAYS

Wool Area - In exhibitor's eyes
For the first time, there also will be a dedicated Wool Forum. During the jury meeting held in advance of the fair, the PERFORMANCE DAYS expert panel took a critical look at new developments and innovations in the wool sector.
PERFORMANCE DAYS asked some of the exhibitors, who will present the wool-highlights at the next spring show, about the key trends in the field of wool, the current and future importance of focusing on this natural fiber for the performance sector, and the expectations exhibitors have for the new Wool Area.
What topics will play an important role in the wool segment in the future?
Woolmark: Merino wool has become a cornerstone of performance apparel, offering a natural, sustainable alternative to synthetic materials. Its unique properties—temperature regulation, moisture-wicking, and breathability—make it ideal for activewear, from alpine climbs to trail runs. Some highlights we would like to focus on:
Natural Performance: Merino wool adapts to your body’s rhythms, keeping you warm in cold weather and cool in heat. Lightweight and versatile, it transitions seamlessly across activities and seasons. Its elasticity ensures unrestricted movement, delivering comfort and flexibility for athletes and adventurers.
Sustainability: As a renewable, biodegradable fiber, Merino wool is free from microplastic pollution and supports sustainable consumption. Grazing sheep with nature-positive practices enhance biodiversity and soil health, aligning with the outdoor industry’s commitment to preserving nature.
Innovation for the Future: Merino wool’s fine fibers provide next-to-skin comfort, making it a game-changer for base layers. Woolmark continues to invest in innovation, with the latest edition of The Wool Lab showcasing cutting-edge wool fabrics and yarns tailored for the sportswear industry.
Merino wool redefines performance gear, combining comfort, sustainability, and innovation for a greener future.
Utenos: There is a growing consumer demand for sustainable and ethically produced textiles. Advances in wool processing methods and the development of new wool-based products will continue to shape the industry. Last but not least an understanding supply and demand fluctuations, price trends, and the impact of global economic conditions will be crucial.
Feinjersey: Wool plays a key role here, especially through certified standards such as RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) or GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). Circular economy and recyclability of wool products are exciting topics that are being further developed. The focus is on: hybrid textiles that combine wool with synthetic fibers to optimize specific requirements such as breathability and durability; ultra-fine wool fibers for lightweight and skin-friendly clothing, which is ideal for both summer and winter sports; improved finishing techniques for water- and dirt-repellent properties an in general the development of smart wool textiles, such as those with temperature-regulating or UV-protection properties, will increase.
How important is wool as a natural material in the performance sector, and why?
Utenos: Wool is highly valued in the performance sector due to its excellent insulation and moisture-wicking properties, making it suitable for both warm and cold conditions. It is a biodegradable and renewable resource, which aligns with the increasing emphasis on sustainability in performance wear. Wool’s natural breathability and comfort make it a preferred choice for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts.
Feinjersey: Wool is unique in that it provides both insulation and breathability, making it ideal for various climates and season. Merino wool offers a soft feel on the skin, prevents odors, and naturally regulates body temperature. As a renewable and biodegradable material, wool sets new standards in environmentally friendly performance apparel. At dfine by Feinjersey, we have had particularly positive experiences with our “Double Face” articles in the performance sector. For these qualities, wool is placed on the outside to enhance comfort, while the inside consists of materials such as Lyocell, Modal, or Polyamide. This combination promotes moisture transport and creates an ideal balance between functionality and comfort.
How important is the focus on wool for you, particularly in relation to the Trend Forum – for the first time, there will be a dedicated forum table for wool.
Woolmark: We are delighted to be part of the dedicated table for wool in the Trend Forum. With the rise of man-made fibres proclaiming to offer improved functional performance, the market share of Merino wool and other natural fibres has declined. Yet this supposed performance came at a cost, with an industry now dominated by fossil fuel-derived fibres. The Wool Area is the perfect place to showcase that Merino wool’s unique natural structure is inherently suited to support outdoor athletes with their performance. The Wool Lab is our wool fabric sourcing tool to connect industry with the best suppliers from around the world. At Performance Days Munich March 2024 Woolmark will present its latest edition of The Wool Lab, with two books dedicated to the sportswear industry, showcasing the latest commercially available wool fabrics and yarns.
