Fabrics' footprint in the ocean

Wednesday 20th April 2016

14:45 - 15:45 CEST

Presentation Area next to the PERFORMANCE FORUM

This presentation will give an overview of the pollution of the world’s oceans by anthropogenic litter. The audience will learn about the sources and the distribution of marine litter and its implications in the marine environment. Smallest plastic particles, the so-called microplastics, represent a substantial but yet poorly investigated fraction of marine plastic litter. Synthetic textiles have been identified as one source of microplastics. How do synthetic textile fibres escape to the sea and what are the consequences for marine wild-life? These questions will be addressed in this presentation.

About the orator

Lars Gutow is working as marine biologist at the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research. He is doing mainly research at the German coast of the North Sea, but also in other regions of the world’s oceans from polar to tropic latitudes. Since many years, he investigates the interactions of marine species with their environment. A special focus of his research is on the implications of human activities on the marine environment. Accordingly, global climate change, ocean acidification and, especially, the pollution of the oceans by plastic litter have captured his interest.
