Phase out of PFAS on the international regulatory agenda

PERFORMANCE DAYS, Munich

Presentation Area next to the PERFORMANCE FORUM

Wednesday 16th November 2016

12:45 - 13:45 CET

The per and polyfluorinated chemistry has been on the international market for decades and it is not until recently meaning the last 15 years that these chemicals and polymers are under regulatory scrutiny due to discoveries by science on their critical health and environmental charateristics. Findings of their persistent, biomagnifying and toxic characteristics on humans and environment have started regulatory actions for an international phase out where also alternatives such as the siloxane chemistry is under review on their possible hazardous characteristics. Currently so called longer chain per and poly fluorinated chemicals such as PFOS and PFOA and their related chemistry are on the phase out agenda at the Stockholm Convention and in the EU also so called shorter chain  per and poly fluorinated chemicals are under regulatory consideration and assessment. So the near future perspective to maintain properties such as highly durable quality water and soil repellent properties on e.g textiles with low toxic chemistry is a major future challenge that partly already happens now.

About the orator

Mr Stefan Posner

Swerea IVF

Senior Researcher

Stefan Posner is polymer and textile chemist with over 30 years of experience in research on chemicals in textiles and polymeric materials in collaboration with international companies, government agencies and the academic world, working in several international projects over the years. Stefan has been working for many years with the preparatory work on chemicals legislation to international bodies and agencies such as UNEP / Stockholm Convention, the European Commission and national governments/authorities and is deeply involved in research on the identification of hazardous chemicals relevant to the textile, leather and related polymer materials and how you can practically substitute them in these value chains. Some focus groups of chemicals are fluorine chemistry and flame retardants linked to both the textile and other related uses.
