Designing with/designing out waste

PERFORMANCE DAYS, Munich

Presentation Area next to the PERFORMANCE FORUM

Thursday 21st April 2016

11:45 - 12:45 CEST

Designers have recently shown unique approaches to utilising pre and post consumer waste to eliminate the burden on the environment and produce resource-saving sportswear. Although the concept of ‘designing with waste’ is an important first step, the ultimate goal should be to ‘design out waste’, so that textile waste can be prevented and materials can be used and re-used as part of a circular economy. Anne’s presentation will showcase inspiring examples of how designers have used waste as a valuable raw material, before sharing key design strategies that can contribute to designing out waste altogether.  Looking towards the future, Anne will examine the current growth of textile-based wearable technology and the complex environmental challenges arising from these types of performance sports products, before discussing opportunities for developing end-of-life solutions.
