The presentation will give an overview about application fields of functional antimicrobial fibres with a special focus on sport textiles. It deals with requirements for a reasonable use of antimicrobial active substances with regard to efficacy and safety aspects. Methods for the assessment of hygienic effectiveness and skin toxicity are presented as well as the evaluation of odour reduction by functional textiles.

Anja Gerhardts studied Biology with a focus on genetics, physiology, biochemistry and virology at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, where she graduated to Dr. rer. nat. in 2008 at the Department of General Virology (Institute for Genetics). Since 2008 she is working as a scientist at the Hohenstein Institutes in the Department for Hygiene, Environment and Medicine. The focus of her work is on R&D in molecular biology and virology with special regard to safety aspects, prevention and diagnosis by innovative textiles in health care and environmental applications.
