The Future of Insulation

Material Spotlight: Freezing? Not with our insulation favorites!

When temperatures drop, we rely on warm clothing with effective insulation, and the future holds some remarkable innovations in this field. Today’s padding materials span the full spectrum of recycled, natural, and bio-based options, reflecting a clear industry shift: virtually no one relies on virgin polyester insulation anymore. Instead, brands and manufacturers are embracing smarter, more responsible solutions that deliver both performance and sustainability.

Insulation Today: Where Sustainability Meets High Performance

The insulation landscape in textiles has undergone a profound transformation. Today, virgin polyester paddings are virtually phased out. Instead, recycled, natural, and bio-based materials now dominate the entire spectrum of insulation solutions. The challenge? These sustainable alternatives must not only reduce environmental impact but also deliver top-tier performance in warmth, lightness, durability, and washability.

Recycling and Innovation at the Core

Textile-to-textile (T2T) recycling is key. Brands like Youngone are leading the way by mechanically recycling their own garment manufacturing waste. For example, Ecoloft Zero contains up to 50% T2T fibers, yet achieves outstanding thermal performance and washability, proving that a high recycled content doesn’t mean compromising on quality.

Imbotex stands out with Cashfeel, a luxurious padding blending recycled polyester and recycled cashmere. This material showcases how sustainability and premium quality go hand in hand.

In this Material Story we highlight a selection of materials that exemplify the future of circular textile production. From mechanically recycled fabrics to advanced chemical recycling technologies, these innovations prove that textile-to-textile recycling is not only possible but scalable. Each material tells a story of progress—toward higher quality, lower impact, and true circularity.

Outlast Technologies GmbH

Aersulate Fibers

Exhibitor Innovation

100% CV

Outlast presents Aersulate®, an innovative insulation fiber combining wood-based viscose with 50% aerogel by volume. Independent tests show a +35% RCT increase in wadding and +37% in needlefelt (both 90% Aersulate® / 10% PLA). TOG values confirm the improvement. Aersulate® enables lighter constructions or enhanced insulation. Unlike conventional materials, its aerogel-infused structure traps air within the fiber, maintaining insulation even under compression - ideal for stress zones like knees, elbows, or performance garments.

YOUNGONE CORPORATION VX

Ecoloft Zero

Insulation & Fibres

50% rec. PES, 50% Textile to Textile polyester

EcoLoft™ Zero is high-performance insulation made from recycled textile scraps. Garnetted fibers create a wavy structure that delivers excellent warmth-to-weight, stretch, and packability. The vertically lapped design with hydrophobic synthetic fibers enhances moisture vapor transfer, keeping skin climate comfortable. Soft and lightweight, it suits garments needing extreme softness or freedom of movement, such as active or lightweight wear. By turning discarded fabrics into dyeing-free colored fibers, it tells a powerful sustainable story—waste into warmth with design freedom.

3M

3MThinsulate CR

Insulation & Fibres

35% PES, 65% PP

Introducing our innovative insulation, crafted using advanced melt-blown technology. This product is embedded with polypropylene extreme fiber, boasting a single-fiber diameter that is 1/30 the thickness of a human hair. This microscopic fineness significantly amplifies its thermal insulation capabilities, ensuring superior warmth retention. Furthermore, it comprises 35% recycled content. It is engineered to be exceptionally lightweight and breathable while maintaining a compact profile, ideal for the development of high-performance accessory products such as gloves.

IMBOTEX Ultimate Insulations

CASHFEEL

Insulation & Fibres

50% rec. PES, 50% Recycled CASHMERE (WS)

Soft, warm and breathable: CASH-FEEL preserves all the properties of virgin Cashmere. Moreover, this exclusive new insulation has the great advantage to come from already existing resources. Following the circular economy concept, we created a new insulation rising from pre-consume discarded precious cashmere yarns. Sourced and sorted in Italy, they are selected and mechanically transformed into a very fine fiber ready to be processed to become a really warm and high quality insulation.

Down Creators AD

TXdown Recycled

Insulation & Fibres

25% PES, 75% Down & Down Fibers

TXdown Recycled is the world’s first natural down wadding without external scrims, made from 75% recycled down, down fibers, and feather fibers, and 25% technical fibers. By binding a fine selection down clusters and the finest down and feather fibers together in a wadding, TXdown provides superior warmth and thermal comfort, suitable for a host of applications. Available in different weights (50gsm to 150gsm) and quality levels.

New Materials and Technologies

  • Outlast Aerogel made from viscose was featured as one of the top 10 innovations last season. This advanced material offers exceptional thermal storage with lightweight, breathable properties.
  • 3M Thinsulate uses an extremely high concentration of ultra-fine polypropylene fibers, providing outstanding insulation capacity in a remarkably thin wadding.
  • Ziran introduces wool blends in insulation, combining wool and Tencel to deliver natural warmth and moisture regulation. Popular in baselayers, these blends are now gaining traction in insulation layers.

Recycled Down – Innovation in Feather Fillings

In the down insulation sector, sustainability is advancing rapidly. Down Creators and TX Down Recycled produce fillings with a high content of recycled feathers and down. A unique feature: they do so without extra scrims or backing fabrics, making them pioneers in truly sustainable down insulation.

Conclusion

The insulation industry is undergoing a deep shift. Sustainability is no longer a compromise but an integral part of premium product quality. Modern insulation materials combine recycled, bio-based, and natural fibres with cutting-edge technologies to ensure warmth, comfort, and durability, all without relying on virgin polyester. This is how insulation today meets the demands of both performance and environmental responsibility.
