This sums up the sourcing trends as shown at Functional Fabric Fair powered by PERFORMANCE DAYS in Portland and New York. The material might be fashional looking, but have yet high-functional properties as good moisture transport, cooling or warming effects and can have finishings like UV cut, anti odor or quick dry.

Best of US-Forum - November 2019

The absolute fashion highlights are to be found on this table, which presents a cross-section of the most popular fabrics at the Functional Fabric Fair in New York in July this year. The interplay with the surfaces makes these fabrics so fascinating. Three-dimensionality and depth are achieved with quilted, padded fabrics for jackets and coats, mid-layers with a convincing woolly touch, from knits and warp-knits to felted wool. Crinkle is also on show, shiny silky surfaces as well as matt, or even the waxed variety.

Best of US-Forum - November 2018

This new table was created to show the highlights from the Functional Fabric Fair powered by PERFORMANCE DAYS held for the first time in New York last July. Functional fabrics are in high deman, while at the same time, the fashion look is important. A new naturalness in function is shown by the soft woolen fabrics, knits, blends, merino wool, corduroy, and felts. Prints are important as are the stylish "all-overs" on functional laminates, which are often even reflective. The display includes transparent laminates and jacquards and even fabrics with high-low embossing effects.

Find all the fabrics on ten TABLES

Divided into the ten most important functional fabric categories, the PERFORMANCE FORUM TABLES offer the first look at current trends and textile innovations.

BASELAYER

This table includes all fabrics suitable to be worn directly on the skin –mostly knits.
They have good moisture transport, cooling or warming effects, and can have finishings like UV-protection, odor control, or quick-dry. They are for use in sports underwear, base-layer or single-layer.

MIDLAYER

These fabrics are intended for use between the outer- and base layers. They are used for warmth retention and include mainly fleece or other knitted fabrics. These fabrics can be brushed or bonded, but cannot be coated or laminated.

SOFTSHELL

These fabrics are worn as outer- or mid-layer. They can be elastic and are mostly bonded knits or sometimes bonded woven. Windproof or wind-permeable, water repellent and sometimes even waterproof, these fabrics are used for jackets or pants.

3LAYER

This table shows fabrics used for the outer layer of the functional garment system. 2.5layer are fabrics consisting of a outer fabric plus a lamination or coating plus a print or flock. 3layer fabrics are constructions of a outer fabric plus lamination/coating and print/flock. Both are  tapeable, waterproof, and breathable. These highly functional fabrics are used for jackets or pants.

2LAYER

These 2layer fabrics are used for the outer layer of the functional garment system. They are woven and either laminated or coated. They can be elastic and must be breathable and waterproof for use in jackets and pants. The term “Lightweight” applies if the construction is under 100g/sqm.

HIGHDENSITY & LIGHTWEIGHT

HIGHDENSITY fabrics are for use with padding or down and for very low denier fibers. They are downproof by construction or ultralight coatings.

LIGHTWEIGHT fabrics are for highly aerobic activities. They are windproof, single layer fabrics, with or without a coating.

SHIRT & PANTS

These fabrics can be used as the second or base layer.
They are mostly woven and can have either a light or heavy quality. They can be elastic but also have to have functional properties such as quick dry, water repellant or breathable. They are used in sport shirts and pants for outdoor, hiking, climbing, biking, ski touring, fitness, and yoga.

ATHLEISURE

This category combines the requirements of sports with a fashionable casual look. Natural fibers, excellent feel, and optimal comfort are characteristic of these fabrics, which are equally ideally suited for biking to the office, workout, or yoga session or for completing the business outfit. Odor-management, quick-drying, and stretch figure prominently in the functional description.

SAFETY & DURABILITY

These fabrics are well-suited for garments exposed to harsh/extreme conditions. Possible functionalities are: flame retardant, cut resistant, high visibility, quick dry, UV-protection, antistatic, no pilling, no snagging, and odor control, etc.
They are ideal for professional wear for firemen, police, medical staff, lumberjacks, and construction workers and highly demaning outdoor sports.

JURY'S PICK

These fabrics are specially chosen by the PERFORMANCE FORUM JURY; this TABLE is dedicated to a changing topic per event. The JURY consists of experts from fabric technology, sports design, independent experts from universities, textile consulting managers and purchasing departments from different outdoor brands.
